Study Background

Otolaryngologists play a critical role in diagnosing and managing diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. With increasing population needs and evolving healthcare access challenges, it is crucial to understand the geographic distribution of otolaryngologists relative to patient demand. Traditional methods to assess workforce sufficiency often rely on physician counts versus population, but these measures may not fully capture actual patient interest or demand for otolaryngology services. This study innovatively integrates digital health analytics, specifically Google Trends data reflecting relative search volumes for otolaryngology-related terms, to complement workforce data and provide insights into where supply-demand mismatches are most pronounced. Accurate assessment of these disparities is essential to inform policy, training programs, and allocation strategies aiming to reduce healthcare access inequities.

Study Design

This cross-sectional study utilized publicly available datasets:
– Otolaryngologist workforce data by state were sourced from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
– Population estimates were obtained from the United States Census Bureau to calculate physician density (otolaryngologists per 10,000 residents).
– Google Trends data provided relative search volume (RSV) metrics for nine otolaryngology-related search terms aggregated at the state level.
